Without further ado (we’re all rushing right now, after all), let me give you a few do’s and don’ts for doing business in Latin America during the so-called festive season. Consider it my Christmas present to you, a useful survival guide that will save you a headache or two…
DO
– Expect everything to slow down. About right now. Expect little movement after Friday 18th. Some businesses will still be working hard right up to the 23rd, though.
– Remember that in South America we’re heading for our long-awaited summer holidays. So January and February can be pretty quiet in countries like Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. That doesn’t mean we are all on holiday (if only…) but business is generally slow.
– Remember that Central America will be a different story altogether, and that Mexico is calendar-wise more aligned to the US than to the rest of Latin America.
– Get ready for a busy first three weeks in March, before Easter. Invest January and February in planning for 2016 (if you haven’t done it yet) and working out your regional strategy. Make sure that when it all goes mad in March you’re well prepared.
– Give your fellow Latin American colleagues, clients, partners, distributors, a quick ring and wish them Merry Christmas and a great start to 2016 if you can. It’s such a nice touch and much better than a one-size-fits-all e-card. The personal touch is truly appreciated here.
DO NOT
– Expect much to happen between Christmas and New Year (a bit like in the UK).
– Expect much too happen between New Year and 7th January (6th January is Epiphany, widely observed).
– Plan visits to Latin America from mid-December until the start of March. It is likely that you won’t find all the decision makers you need.
– Be shocked if people ask you about your family plans. Don’t be shocked either if their greetings have a rather strong religious tone, particularly from some countries.
And if you feel like it, why not come over and enjoy Christmas and New Year’s with us? Santa on the beach postcard included!
